The original name for this post was “The End.” I’ve been a word person my whole life and it seemed ironic to me to name the first post “The End.” But even though The End is what allowed me to make this beginning, I am at the point where I only want to look ahead and so I think of it as the leap forward instead of the end of the last chapter. After nearly 20 years with the same company, I decided to make a change. That decision to leave took somewhere between 2 days and 5 years…depending on...

Ten years ago, I decided not to be fat anymore. After being 50-60 pounds overweight my whole life, I’d had enough. Years of bets, resolutions, diet programs, etc. failed. But deciding worked. I created my own rules. I didn’t stop eating my favorite foods; I didn’t exercise. Less than 9 months later, I’d lost 52 pounds…and I’ve kept it off since. The same thing happened the day I decided to quit smoking. I woke up one day 24 years ago and said, “I’ve had my last cigarette.” You have the power to change ANYTHING you want…once you decide to. p.s. If you want to see...

Are your goals making you better – or holding you back?...

If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably surrounded by amazing success stories. I know I am. It seems like everyone is getting funding, doubling every year, and selling at ridiculous multiples. And there you are…wondering if you’ll even make payroll. It’s the entrepreneurial equivalent of comparing your body to Kate Upton’s (or whoever makes guys feel inadequate). Need a reality check? Back some Kickstarter campaigns. You’ll see how the sausage is made…and when it isn’t. Patent issues, delivery nightmares, missing funding goals, and just general failure. Now realize I’m not suggesting you look there for excuses, just for reality. ...

A lot of people live in mantras: “There is no try, there is only do.” “You can do anything you put your mind to.” And the like. But sometimes when you think you can’t do it, you’re right. Look, we all have gifts and talents. But we also have things we’re terrible at. I’m a machine gun with ideas but a nerf gun with implementation. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying you shouldn’t try. Or that you can’t do it. Just that IF you can’t, that’s okay. Find someone who can and focus on what you do great....
