I’ve really been lax…with my football metaphors. After all, there are few life lessons that can’t be taught through football* Here’s one I use often: Don’t worry if your boss “likes” something or it makes him “happy.” Worry if it contributes to the core business goal – revenue, profit, attracting customers. Otherwise, it’s like you’re a wide receiver going deep while watching your coach the whole time. You will NOT catch that ball and score. If you keep your eye on the right thing, your boss will be happy – because you’re helping the team win (and making him look good). *This does...

I’ve always hated the phrase “I just don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.” It means you have an idea that will move a project or the organization forward, but you may not share it because you’re worried someone will be upset that you crossed some (imaginary) line. My response is always the same: You can’t step on my toes. And if you don’t want your toes stepped on, wear steel-tipped boots. Whenever people focus more on protecting their territory than on improving the outcome, the company is destined to fail. That kind of selfishness destroys businesses over time....

The other day, I passed a man lying on the street in a sleeping bag surrounded by carts full of his stuff. I stopped and offered him a Starbucks gift card with $5 on it. He looked at me very kindly and said, “No, thank you. I’m not a customer of theirs anymore.” (True story…verbatim) I could see on his face he felt they’d disrespected him. I was shocked he turned it down, but oddly proud and inspired. And I realized what an important lesson he shared: Don’t disrespect yourself by doing business with people that don’t value you. ...

This is not a political post… it’s about marketing. So pretend they weren’t running for president but trying to sell you a weight-loss supplement. Trump: You’re gonna lose so much weight. Huge weight loss. You’re gonna look amazing…so amazing you’ll go from a 4 to an 8 or 9. Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t do it. Clinton: My opponent’s product doesn’t work the way he says it does. I’m going to continue studying the best options to optimize long-term weight loss in the safest way possible for the entire community. Who are most Americans buying from?...

Do you suffer from DPS…Decision Paralysis Syndrome? Do you panic that you might make the wrong decision so you put it off until it’s too late? Or worse, decide to put it up to a vote? Imagine if the military operated that way. Our troops would be ambushed while their COs finished a round robin tournament of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Decision making is a critical function of leadership. And, more to the point, indecision disqualifies you from the role. If you aren’t willing to make decisions (yes, even unpopular ones), you can’t lead – no matter what your job title....
